Laboratory for Sustainable and Additive Manufacturing
.Research Areas:
1. 3D Bioprinting for Tissue Engineering and Regenarative Medicine: my most recent research is to apply inkjet and microextrusion bioprinting technology to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to address the need for tissues and organs suitable for transplantation.
2. Laser Additive Manufacturing: my current research is dedicated to manufacture and remanufacture parts through direct energy deposition, laser powder bed fusion technology. Direct energy deposition (laser cladding) is an additive manufacturing process that uses 3D CAD data as a digital information source and energy in the form of a high powered laser beam (usually an ytterbium fiber laser) to create three-dimensional metal parts by fusing fine metallic powders together. In my research laser powder bed fusion technology is applied to remanufacture the die cutter and blade in the rotary cutting die equipment, piston head, exhaust valves and valve seat in the marine engine.
3. Sustainable Manufacturing: my main research is dedicated to improve the economic and environmental performance of industrial productions from both material and energy perspectives. Current research focuses on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), cost benefit optimization, environmental emission control (including greenhouse gas emission mitigation, toxic chemical emission management, and solid waste recycling), clean energy supply (Solar, Wind, Fuel Cells), and manufacturing energy efficiency improvement.
4. Environmental Sustainability: eveloping systematic methods and novel techniques to understand and mitigate the environmental impact of nanotechnologies, particularly from the nano-particle emissions and the associated impacts on the environment and human health.
5. Nano-materials/Structure for Energy Conversion and Storage: Novel nano-materials and nano-structure are developed for improving Lithium-ion battery performance by using silicon nanowire based anode.
6. Advanced Manufacturing: CAD/CAM, CNC, 3D Printing for plastics, Rapid Prototype.
