In fall 2021, the Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management will welcome the first cohort of a brand-new program, a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management Technology. Responding to industry demands and student and alumni feedback, the college developed the new program to train students in the technology, as well as the managerial aspects, involved in work as an engineering manager. These can include work responsibilities such as component design, supply-chain management, quality management and systems integration.

“Technology programs are becoming increasingly popular, because there’s a huge overlap between engineering and technology programs,” said Shereazad Jimmy Gandhi, associate professor of manufacturing systems engineering and management, who is working with the new program. “Students in the program will be cultivating industry-focused skills, which make them more employable and able to hit the ground running. The beauty of this new program is that it will preserve the basic engineering and technology skills, but also introduce the basic management skills that, as a technology major, you should have when you go into the workforce.”

In addition to myriad technology skills, students in the program will get an introduction to business-related skills such as accounting. business law, macroeconomics, marketing and operations management. They also will hone communication skills and be able to function well in multidisciplinary teams as leaders.

College leaders hope the new program will provide a more accessible pathway to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.
