Each year before the beginning of the Spring Semester, CSUN organizes a Faculty Retreat. The Retreat features faculty presentations, workshops, and invited speakers in a beautiful setting. The purpose of the Reatreat is to offer faculty a relaxing environment for two days to exchange ideas and socialize with their colleagues from all over campus and with the CSUN high-administration. This year the Faculty Retreat took place at the Mariott Hotel in Ventura one block from the beach.
As you know, this year our campus celebrates its 50th anniversary. The theme of this year's retreat was based on this anniversary: Fifty and Fabulous - Foundations for the Future The keynote address was made by CSUN President, Jolene Koester: Focusing Forward for Another Fabulous Fifty. The Retreat was concluded with a presentation by the CSUN Provost, Harry Hellenbrand: Help Me, if You Can: Models for Supporting Faculty and Staff. There were sessions on teaching methods, on online education, on ways to improve students' active participate and learning process. The session entitled "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: How CSUN Prepares Its Own" was a panel discussion by CSUN faculty and staff who are CSUN alumni. For you, students, it might be interesting to know that some of our past students became CSUN professors and/or active staff. In this session some of them told their story about studying at CSUN years ago, and how CSUN helped them in their personal and professional development, and stimulated them to stay at our University. Two fascinating stories in this session were those of Professors Brennis Lucero-Wagoner, Psychology/S&BS and Steven Stepanek, Computer Science.
The poster session had faculty from various Colleges and Departments at CSUN making presentations on topics of current interest. Professor Costea's "Manufacturing is Beautiful" poster presented various special programs and activities of the MSEM Department: the ACCESS program, Undergraduate Research in Material Engineering, teaming with local High Schools, participation at the FIRST Robotics national competition and at SME WESTEC annual exhibition/conference, organizing the TechFest of VEX small robots at CSUN, teaching and experimenting with emerging technologies (among which advanced CAD/CAM, manacturing intelligence, nano fabrication, smart devices), and the online graduate Engieering Management Program.
