Sembiam R Rengarajan received the BE (Honors) degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Madras, India in 1971, master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 1974 and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Canada in 1980. Since 1980 he has been with California State University, Northridge, presently serving as Professor. He was a guest researcher at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden in the summer of 1990. He has held visiting professorships at UCLA during 1987-88, at Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Spain in 1996, at the University of Pretoria during the summer of 1997, and at the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark during the spring 1999. He was a visiting researcher at UCLA during 1984-1993, collaborating with Prof Robert Elliott. In 2005 he received an honorary position as an adjunct professor at the Electromagnetics Academy of Zhejiang University in Hang Zhou, China. He had summer fellowships at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Hanscom AFB, MA in 1995 and at the Naval Research Laboratory in 1998.

Prof. Rengarajan has served as a consultant to Hughes Aircraft Company, Rantec Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech, Lockheed Corporation, US Navy, United Nations Development Program, India, Saab Ericsson Space (presently RUAG), Gothenburg, Sweden/European Space Agency, and HRL Laboratories, among others.

Prof. Rengarajan’s research interests include analytical and numerical techniques in electromagnetics with applications to antennas, scattering and passive microwave components. He has published more than 220 journal articles and conference papers.

Prof. Rengarajan has served as the Chair of the Commission on Waves and Fields of the US National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science during 2012-2014. He was the Chair of the Los Angeles Chapter of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society during 1983-84, and also chaired the San Fernando Valley Section of IEEE during 1995. He is a Fellow of IEEE (1994) and of the Electromagnetics Academy. He has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation (2000-03) and as the Chair of the Education Committee of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (APS). He founded the Education Column in the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine and served as an Associate Editor during 2000-2002. Presently he serves in the editorial boards of the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation (open access journal) and Wiley’s International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer Aided Engineering.

Prof. Rengarajan received the Preeminent Scholarly Publication Award from CSUN in 2005, CSUN Research Fellow Award in 2010, and the Distinguished Engineering Educator of the Year Award from the Engineers' Council of California in 1995. He has received more than 20 awards from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for his innovative research and technical contributions to the Spacecraft Antenna Research Group and the Deep Space Network Antennas at Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

He was a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE APS during 2011-13.
