During that period, the college increased the number of bachelor\u2019s degrees it granted in engineering by 96%. (Computer science majors were excluded from the tally.)<\/p>\n<p>As part of its mission to advance the art and science of engineering for the general welfare of humankind, the Engineers\u2019 Council recognizes engineers and scientists from industry and academia for their contributions. On February 20, at its annual awards banquet, the organization honored six CECS faculty members.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignleft\" title=\"joharihamid08.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/joharihamid08.jpg\" alt=\"joharihamid08.jpg\" width=\"50\" \/><strong>Hamid Johari<\/strong>, ME department chair, received the John J. Guarrera Engineering Educator of the Year Award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignright\" title=\"osornobruno2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/osornobruno2.jpg\" alt=\"osornobruno2.jpg\" width=\"50\" \/><strong>Bruno Osorno<\/strong>\u00a0(ECE) and\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignright\" title=\"wanggeorge07.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/wanggeorge07.jpg\" alt=\"wanggeorge07.jpg\" width=\"50\" \/><strong>George Wang<\/strong>\u00a0(CS) both received Distinguished Engineering Educator Awards.<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignleft\" title=\"roostaramin.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/roostaramin.jpg\" alt=\"roostaramin.jpg\" width=\"50\" \/><strong>Ramin Roosta<\/strong>\u00a0(ECE) received a 2010 Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignright\" title=\"connerdale07.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/connerdale07.jpg\" alt=\"connerdale07.jpg\" width=\"50\" \/><strong>Dale Conner<\/strong>\u00a0(MSEM) and\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignright\" title=\"amineghanem.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/amineghanem.jpg\" alt=\"amineghanem.jpg\" width=\"50\" \/><strong>Amine Ghanem<\/strong>\u00a0(CEAM) both received Outstanding Engineering Achievement Merit Awards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, the team lead by\u00a0<strong>Tom Brown<\/strong>, CSUN\u2019s executive director for facilities management in the Physical Plant Management department, received a Distinguished Engineering Project Achievement Award for the Satellite Chiller Plant and Sub-Tropical Rain Forest project. This design, build and construct project has received numerous awards, including the best sustainable project award at the UC\/CSU\/CCC Sustainability Conference in 2009. In conjunction with the campus\u2019s 1 mW fuel cell\u2014currently the largest of its kind on any university campus in the world\u2014this project positions CSUN at the forefront of sustainability programs. Team members from CECS included\u00a0<strong>Alvaro Olague, Varoon Bahri, Zekil Patel, Mohamed Alzarouni, Marouane Berny<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ashwin Krishnan<\/strong>. CECS professor\u00a0<strong>Sidney Schwartz<\/strong>\u00a0and ME professor\u00a0<strong>Robert Ryan<\/strong>\u00a0served as faculty advisors. Alumni\u00a0<strong>Mikhail Yefimov<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Shawn McConomy<\/strong>\u00a0were also part of the team.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignleft\" title=\"dijulioshoeleh07.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/dijulioshoeleh07.jpg\" alt=\"dijulioshoeleh07.jpg\" width=\"75\" \/><strong>Shoeleh Di Julio<\/strong>\u00a0(ME) assumed the role of associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science in August 2009. Diane Schwartz, who served as associate dean from 2007\u201309, returned to teaching and research in the Computer Science department.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"floatright alignright\" title=\"CaganichBarbara.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecs.csun.edu\/ecsdean\/pics\/spectra2010\/CaganichBarbara.jpg\" alt=\"CaganichBarbara.jpg\" width=\"75\" \/><strong>Barbara Caganich<\/strong>\u00a0assumed the role of development director for the colleges of Engineering and Computer Science and Science and Mathematics in April 2010.
