      The objective of the research is to develop a  computerized procedure for prediction of earthquake losses associated with a direct damage to an individual building subject to ground shaking. The research is analytical. It will target establishing explicit theoretical relationships between the SEAOC-UBC earthquake resistant design philosophy and the motion-damage characteristic wanted by insurance industry. 
     The study utilizes a new concept of a seismic code consistent with its predecessors and, at 
the same time, performance-oriented, as well as convenient for both design of new and seismic evaluation of existing buildings.  This will, hopefully, result in increasing both availability and affordability of earthquake coverage and, finally, in lessening the burden of hazard mitigation imposed on the federal government.
