Required Material & Equipment

Required Textbook Bundle is available in Matador Book Store – go to the Comp 100 shelves &/or ask the bookstore personnel for help. The bundle contains five books, one each for MSWord, Excel, Access, PowerPoint & a book on Computer Technology; the bundle also contains a flat folder containing the access code for the MyITLab system. If you buy the books used, you will need to purchase a NEW access code; they CANNOT be reused! Do Not Purchase a Used Access Code! The access code allows the use of the MyItLab which is the system used for grading your work in this course. Since the bundle costs $154.75 at the Matador Bookstore and $134.75 at the A+ Textbook Store, do not pay more than $54.75 for the used books, otherwise you will be spending more on the used books “bundle” than on the new books. The bundle ISBN is 9781256163626. DO NOT PURCHASE THE BOOKS FROM AMAZON OR OTHER VENDORS ONLINE! The content of this set of books has been selected, i.e., assembled, according to guidelines established by the CSUN faculty. Textbooks purchased from other vendors may not contain the same material.

1.   In order to work on the class material at home you will need a system that supports either the Windows 7 Operating System or else a Mac computer that can be modified as per item #3 below.

2.   The Windows 7 system must have the Office 2010 Suite installed and supports the installation of the MyITLab system which comes with your textbook package. Neither MS Office 2003 nor MS Works is of any use for this class! The Office 2010 Suite can be purchased at http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx

3.   The current information on the use of MyITLab on the Mac is as follows:

a.   Pearson offers a MyItLab simulator which works on most Mac systems; for a few Mac’s it will not install. Even if it installs, you cannot use one feature of the MyItLab and since Mac OS/X will not support Office 2010 for Windows, the use of a Mac in this instance is crippled.

b.   If you have a new Mac which contains an Intel chip, you can implement the Bootcamp software which partitions your disk and allows the installation of the Windows 7 Operating System on one partition, you can then install Office 2010 and MyITLab on that same side. The Mac OS/X is still available. At startup time, you make the choice whether to run the Mac OS/X or the Windows 7 operating system. The major drawback with this solution is the technical installation of the Bootcamp software. It is probably not the path most of you want to undertake. This solution requires the purchase of Windows 7 operating system and Office 2010. But it also requires a technically trained person who is skilled in disk partitioning. It also takes a restart of the computer system to swap from one operating system to the other. In order to install Bootcamp, Windows and Office 2010 you need approximately 30GB of free space.

c.   If you have a new Mac which contains an Intel chip, you can install VMware Fusion ($49.99) which is enables the installation of the Windows 7 Operating System to run on the Mac without partitioning the disk. Once VMware Fusion is installed, Windows 7, Office 2010 Suite and MyITLab can all be installed. By all current reports, MyItLab, installed in this manner, works without hindrance. It allows the swapping between Mac OS/X and Windows 7 with a simple key stroke; not by a restart of the computer system. This is probably the best solution for most of the class. This solution requires the purchase of VMware Fusion version 4.1, Windows 7 operating system and Office 2010. While it requires an additional cost for the VMware, it does not require disk partitioning, and has excellent support from the VMware and Microsoft staff. In order to install VMware Fusion, Windows and Office 2010 you need approximately 30GB of free space.  https://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/

d.   Instead of installing VMware Fusion, there is a package called VirtualBox which is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2. As is the protocol of Open Source Software Alliance, satisfied users are encouraged to contribute; Oracle ensures the product always meets professional quality criteria. Once again, the major drawback with this solution may be the level of technical knowledge &/or physical endurance required to weave through the installation procedures. Once installed, the performance should be compatible with the VMware Fusion software.

for Mac OS/X choose item listed as

                                                           ·  VirtualBox 4.1.8 for OS X hosts   x86/amd64

e.   If you have an old Mac which contains a Motorola chip, you will not be able to use it in this class.

4.   The installation of MyITLab on your personal computers will be discussed in class; DO NOT attempt to do this until we discuss it in class.

5.   If you manage your time, you can utilize the Comp 100 free lab time, see the lab schedules, to complete your work and thus complete the course without access to a system at home. You will not be able to complete the work during the scheduled class time. If you are later going to make an excuse that do not have a computer at home, please see me now!

10.   Create a file entitled “Lost” on your USB Drive which includes your full name, your phone number, and your email address. This will enable the office staff to efficiently locate you and return your USB drives, perhaps before you even notice that it is gone!

11.   For any work done outside of MyITLab, make sure that you save your work in at least two locations, e.g., on your memory stick, on your hard drive at home and on the U-drive available at CSUN. The U-drive is available by “Saving As” and choosing the U-drive option. Save all projects on your memory strip, your C-drive at home, and on the CSUN provided U-drive; this action will prevent loss of data and having to redo lost work!

12.   Most of the homework and projects will be submitted via a new software tool; however the projects will require the submission of a paper document. DO NOT E-MAIL THOSE PROJECTS TO ME! Submit them to me during class time, or to the computer science office JD4503! Those projects must consist of a cover page (see the syllabus).

13.   DO NOT E-MAIL HOMEWORK OR PROJECTS TO ME! SUBMIT THEM TO ME DURING CLASSTIME OR TO THE COMPUTER SCIENCE OFFICE JD4503 AT OTHER TIMES!

14.   All projects must consist of a cover page (see the syllabus) and each case must be preceded by a subcover sheet (again see the syllabus); projects should be placed in the same order as they were assigned.

15.   To install and use MyITLab from home, you MUST use Internet Explorer, not Firefox, nor any other browser! Use the Installation Wizard; be sure to print and follow the Installation Instructions. If you have problems, please record all relevant information (if not sure what is relevant, try highlighting everything and then press the Ctrl key and while depressing that key, press the letter “c”. Open MSWord, depress the Ctrl key and while depressing that key, press the letter “v”. Print the MSWord document and bring to an office hour.

Now is the time to prepare for the Technology Final Exam by constructing a 3”x3” note card with all the material that you think that you might need to pass the exam. The preparation of the card will help you remember the information that you need. Remember to use all the study tools supplied in the textbook and the associated website!
