History

Tau Beta Pi is the only engineering honor society representing the entire engineering profession. Being the second oldest honor society, Tau Beta Pi was founded in 1885 at Lehigh University by Dr. Edward H. Williams Jr. to recognize students of distinguished scholarship and exemplary character.

The Society has grown into an organization of over 246 collegiate chapters and 40 active alumni chapters across 16 regions of the United States. Currently, there are more than 584,000 members. Tau Beta Pi has a world-wide reputation because of its high standards for membership. Among its members are nine winners of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, 12 Nobel laureates, 25 recipients of the National Medal of Technology, 24 honorees in the National Inventors Hall of Fame, 41 astronauts, 65 recipients of the National Medal of Science, hundreds of members of the National Academy of Engineering, hundreds of corporate CEOs, and even a few Olympic athletes and NFL football players. Thousands of members have received top awards in their national engineering societies. Members of Tau Beta Pi, Tau Bates, are known to be leaders in their profession.

CSUN's California Kappa (CA-K) chapter was founded in 1968. As of the 2016-2017 academic year, has initiated over 1000 members.  The CA-K chapter is part of district 16 which represents Southern California and Southern Nevada.
