Mechanical
Engineering
Mechanical engineers are involved in all aspects of the
design of systems and processes for generating, converting
and using power for beneficial purposes. These aspects
range from the design of mechanical components to the
optimization of large and complex power generation systems
as well as the minimization of environmental impact.
Mechanical engineers apply their knowledge of fundamental
scientific principles and their skills in modeling and
testing to the design of such devices and systems as:
automobile engines, aircraft and space vehicles, gas and
steam turbines, heating and air conditioning systems,
mechatronics and robotic systems.
The Mechanical Engineering department offers Bachelor of
Science (BSME) and Master of Science (MSME) degrees. The
department has many laboratories including the Haas
Manufacturing Laboratory, the Environmental Laboratory, and
the Robotics Laboratory.
