PROBLEM SOLVING TECHNIQUES

The art of problem solving takes on many facets. The following is a suggested list of procedures meant to aid the student in solving most engineering related problems.

Steps for Problem Solving:

1)      Read the entire description of the problem.

2)      Make a list of all given information.

3)      Make a preliminary list of formulas, equations, etc. that are candidate solution tools.

4)      Conceive or mentally develop a solution to the problem based upon sensibility.

5)      Repeat step 3 by refining your list of solution tools that will more accurately solve the problem.

6)      Use the tool(s) in step 5 to solve the problem.

7)      Check your solutions for accuracy, units, and sensibility.
